Recipe | Amish Wedding Roast

For the Amish community, weddings are held in November and December on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. The weddings are typically held in the brides home with about 350-400 guests that will be invited. Services begin at 8:30 am and last until 11:30 am. The bride and groom will usually say their vows about 11:00 am.

Following the service, guests will be served a huge meal including Amish Roast, mashed potatoes, cooked celery, coleslaw, and desserts.

Below we wanted to provide a recipe for the Amish Wedding Roast so that you can get a taste of what the Amish eat at Wedding celebrations in November & December. This recipe serves 350 people.

Shopping List

28 Chickens

8 Pounds Butter

1 Pound Lard

6 Teaspoons Pepper

28 Crocks of Bread Cubes

56 Eggs

28 Teaspoons Salt

3 Crocks Chopped Celery

Melt butter and lard together in a very large pan. Add celery, liver, and gizzards + hearts (from the chickens) to the butter and lard mixture. Brown and cool that portion.

Beat eggs and add eggs, pepper, & salt to the first mixture.

Add bread cubes, celery, & meat to the previous mixture and bake all together, at 250 degrees, for 1 ½ – 2 hours.
